Retirement, finally

How long can a mezzo-soprano sing?

Well Rita Gorr, 81, the wife of my beloved Ernest Blanc, is singing one last time this summer (June and July) at the Vlaamse Opera in Belgium ; she will be the Countess in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades.

Her 58-year career includes highlights in Bayreuth in the late 50s/60s, the creation of Mère Marie in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites in 1957, the role of Dalila in Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila in the early 60s, Amneris in Verdi's Aida, over 40 performances at the MET in New York, roles in Covent Garden (London), Paris, La Scala...

Further readings;
Cantabile Subito, Opera Giocoso (in French).
