Your caption is perfect! That dress and hairdo are totally ridiculous! La Traviata is one of my favorite operas, and I have attended many performances-Boston, New York, Paris. Never have I seen a Violetta dressed so inappropiately. Dessay looks more like a can-can/chorus girl performer!

Anyhow... it seems that stage directors can't do anything with La Traviata but Zefirelli-like or Regietheater-like productions. Talk about the power of imagination...

Have you seen the DVD Callas Forever, Franco Zeffirelli's tribute to Maria Callas? Fanny Ardant stars as Callas, and original Callas recordings are used.

I have. And have always been hypnotized by Fanny Ardant, one of those few French actresses that really command the stage with their presence.
